The Conexus Credit Union has pledged $100,000 to aid female leaders worldwide through a mentorship program geared toward fostering co-operatives and building economic resilience in underdeveloped areas.

The funds will help finance the Women's Mentorship Program managed by the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada. Launched in 2002, the program has benefited over 250 women from credit unions and financial co-operatives in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Mentees gain mentorship, training in governance, and business exposure and often become leaders and mentors in their communities after the program.

As per Celina Philpot, the program involves professional and cultural learning. The mentees get the chance to interact with leaders of Canadian credit unions and understand how banks operate in Canada with the hope of implementing their learning in their own environments. In addition to hosting sessions, the foundation provides an annual curriculum for the program.

Program managers say that the exchange is supposed to be reciprocal. Mariel Edwards-Carreau noted that even though mentees get leadership training, the participating Canadian credit unions get a lot out of the process.

Conexus’ participation demonstrates its general approach to community investing by making sure that a part of its pre-tax earnings goes towards community investments.

Although much attention is paid to programme’s taking place in Saskatchewan, the credit union also participates in programme’s which go beyond the borders of the province and seek to solve economic problems.

It is expected that Conexus will receive two participants of the Programme in Saskatchewan in June. This activity used to be performed jointly with other credit unions in the region before they merged into one organization.
