AFC and India 2022 organisers unveil the tournament logo for Women's Asian Cup

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the local organiser of the Women's Asian Cup in India next year have unveiled the tournament logo for the finals, which will take place from January 20 to February 6.

The finals, which will be held in India, will see the tournament expand to 12 teams, four more than the previous four editions, and will feature a quarter-final stage for the first time.

The logo is based on the original cup design, which was first used at the Jordan tournament in 2018, but it incorporates some local Indian influence.

The maroon in the logo is inspired by Warli artworks, a tribal art form mostly preserved by tribal people from India's Northern Sahyadri Ranges and the host state of Maharashtra, where the hues of red and maroon often form the base of the paintings.

Similarly, the use of silver in the logo reflects the importance of silver jewellery in Indian households as well as the beauty and elegance of the precious metal.

The India 2022 Women's Asian Cup represents a significant step forward for the women's game in Asia, with a record number of 28 nations entering the draw held at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur last month.

Defending champions Japan, runners-up Australia, third-placed China PR, and hosts India have all already qualified for the Finals.

The 28 teams were divided into four four-person groups and four three-person groups. Only the winners of each group will be eligible to compete in India in 2022.

Five Asian teams will qualify for the newly expanded 32-team FIFA Women's World Cup Australia/New Zealand 2023 from the India 2022 event. Australia has already qualified to host the event. There will also be two more inter-continental play-off spots available.
