5 Indian Women Wrestlers to Compete at Paris 2024 Olympics
By: WE Staff | Monday, 5 August 2024
India's Nisha Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat will compete in the women's freestyle 68kg and 50kg categories at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Nisha secured her spot by defeating Romania's Alexandra Anghel in the World Olympic Qualifiers whereas Vinesh will also face a tough challenge in the women's 50kg category. India will have five women wrestlers to compete at the Olympics for the first time, with their performances crucial for India's success in the 21st edition of the Paris Olympics 2024 at the Champ de Mars Arena in the French Capital.
India's two-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat has an exemplary record, she has yet to prove her worth on the biggest stage. In 2016, she suffered a leg injury and was accused of misconduct. Despite considering retirement, Vinesh fought back and secured her position in the 50kg category. Vinesh is India's most accomplished woman wrestler who has won two World Champions, three CWG, and eight Asian Championships medals.
Commonwealth Games silver medallist Anshu Malik (women's 57kg), U-23 world champion Reetika Hooda (76kg), and Asian Championships silver medallist Nisha Dahiya (women's 68kg). These Indian women wrestlers will make their debut alongside Vinesh Phogat (50kg) and Antim Panghal (53kg).
India's wrestling schedule for the 2024 Paris Olympics includes qualification bouts for women and men freestyle. India's qualification rounds will be held on August 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10. The sporting committees have invested in improved training facilities, coaching, and support staff to enhance the performance of its wrestling team, with high expectations for medals and global recognition.
