Carrie Das: Crafting Spaces that Exude Luxury & Timeless Beauty

Luxury design is more than opulence, it's an experience. Meanwhile, timeless interior design is not about following fashion but curating spaces that age with grace, grounded in elegance, craftsmanship, and comfort.

Luxurious interior design is more than an aesthetic choice, it's a philosophy woven into every texture, every hue, and every corner. Following a similar philosophy, interior designer Carrie Das emphasizes on timelessness and quiet luxury in her designs, aiming to create spaces that embody elegance the feels current yet timeless.

Carrie has spent over 16 years shaping the design landscape in the UAE. After relocating from the U.S. in 2008, where she worked across Washington D.C., Tampa, and Atlanta, she began her journey in Dubai as a design director for a hospitality developer.

Her early experiences across various sectors, including interior fit-out, gave her a well-rounded perspective of the industry. In 2012, she co-founded a boutique design firm, specializing in hospitality and residential projects.

This led her to launch Studio Suco Design, a UAE-based design studio, which she aligned with her creative values and embraced a more intuitive, personal, and collaborative design approach. Carrie specializes in crafting bespoke, turn-key interiors, collaborating with a global network of artisans.

In an interaction with Women Entrepreneurs Review team, Carrie takes us through her professional journey, highlighting the key junctures, inspirations and more.

What led you to foray into the field of interior design?

I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from the Art Institute of Tampa. I have always been fascinated by how our surroundings impact our emotions, routines, and sense of self, and my connection with design began with an early curiosity about light, texture, and balance.

I am fond of understanding how people interact with spaces, which naturally grew into a passion for creating environments that elevate everyday life.

While my education gave me the technical foundation, it has been a hands-on learning experience, working closely with clients, and looking at the real impact of good design, which has also shaped my approach to design.

Maintaining strong relationships, whether with clients or within the industry, is essential, and it all comes down to the connections you build and handling tough situations with calm and grace, without ever burning bridges

Tell us about your professional journey as an interior designer, particularly in the Hospitality and Luxury Residential space.

Starting my career in hospitality helped me build a strong foundation in creating layered and experience-driven spaces. But over time, I found myself drawn to high-end residential design as it offered a chance to work directly with homeowners, a more direct and personal relationship with the people actually living in the spaces I design.

I focus on spatial planning, thoughtful detailing, and choosing materials that age beautifully. I often collaborate closely with architects to make sure the interiors and architecture flow seamlessly, and I usually design the landscape too for a real indoor-outdoor connection.

For me, Luxury isn't about excess, it's about refinement, relevance, and authenticity. Rather than following trends or brands, I focus on understanding my client, their routines, their travels, and their stories, to create designs that are deeply personal & functional and feel instant peace walking around their home.

What inspired you to establish Studio SuCo Designs? What core expertise and vision does the interior design studio bring to the table?

I believe that luxury in design is about highlighting authenticity. As a designer, my focus has always been on designing spaces that are feel authentic to my clients and their lifestyle.

This philosophy led me to establish Studio Suco Design. We specialize in high-end residential projects, and even select hospitality or corporate focusing on timeless and luxury.

We are fully integrated, from architecture coordination to MEP to styling kitchen drawers and curating heirloom pieces, as every detail matters. I am involved in every project, whether it's a new build, renovation, or a shell and core, making sure the home reflects the client's lifestyle and story. Each project is a labor of love, spanning years, and the bond with clients is long-lasting.

What are the different hats you wear in your role as the Founder of Studio Suco Designs? How do you balance the company’s everyday operations while working on the company’s core expertise?

As the founder, I lead the creative vision along with being hands-on with everything, from daily project oversight and client strategy to material selection, styling, and on-site quality checks. Having a small team, I make sure to maintain the original design vision along with adequate involvement in each project. It also streamlines decisions and offers clients a single point of contact throughout, making the process smoother.

My role depends on the project's position, including concept design, on-site problem-solving, coordinating with trades, inspecting, and even picking grout colors or sourcing bedding and glassware. I also act as an emotional sounding board, helping clients navigate the stress and dynamics that come with big builds or renovations. I manage timelines, expectations, and communication as a part of the journey.

I prioritize quality over quantity, focusing on timing new projects based on existing ones. I acknowledge industry delays and last-minute changes, but maintain clarity and care in our delivery.

Tell us about the challenges you encounter as an interior designer. How do you successfully overcome the challenges?

One of the biggest challenges is translating the design vision into reality, as no matter how perfectly we plan, things change on-site. Conditions shift, deliveries get delayed, and timelines move.

Without hampering the client's experience, we manage expectations and maintain clear communication. Being hands-on on a project enables me to detect early issues, adapt quickly, and make sure the vision stays consistent.

I have also stepped into challenging projects which were half-done, or the contractor had quit, or there were poor finishes, no direction. I have always brought such challenging projects back on track, either aligning them with the original intent or creating a new one altogether, offering a sigh of relief and joy to the clients.

Staying calm, understanding the potential issues, and being solution-driven is what keeps everything moving forward smoothly.

Looking back at your journey, what has been your guiding leadership philosophy? What is your ‘success mantra’?

My leadership philosophy is ‘leading with clarity and designing with integrity & authenticity’. I am intentional about the projects I take on, giving each one my full attention and care. I don't aim to build a huge firm, I want to create homes that truly matter.

For me, the real award is that moment when a client walks in and says, "I finally feel at home". That's what makes it all worth it. Maintaining a calm, steady approach, handling challenges with grace, and maintaining strong relationships are crucial for success in this region, especially with clients and industry professionals.
