India Looking Forward To Creating A Green & Inclusive Energy Sector
By: Rachita Sharma, Managing Editor | Tuesday, 30 July 2024
India is the third largest producer of electricity in the world. The energy sector is one of the most crucial sectors for the India economy. Not only does it light up our lives literally, but it also acts as a catalyst for growth and development in the country.
India is also moving towards adopting more green energy practices. The industry is undergoing major transformation owing to innovation and technology. However, one major challenge still remains, i.e. inclusivity.
Internationally, women make up 39 percent of the global labour force but they account for only 16 percent of the traditional energy sector. The number of India is even lower. Indian women make a meagre seven percent of the energy sector in the country. The number dwindle further as we go up the management ladder.
The barriers faced by women in the energy sector are nothing new. Harsh working conditions, long work hours, gender stereotypes, systemic barriers, lack of mentorship etc are the leading cause of women not being a part of the energy sector. However, it is essential that more women join the sector and play an equal role in making the transition to green power a reality.
While our hope for the future is to see more women join the energy sector, yet it is also important to celebrate the women who have paved the way by foraying in the male-dominated field. One such stalwart in the green energy sector is Rena Singh Ghai, the Managing Director of Green Ice Solutions, specializing in renewable energy and solar solutions. With over 14 years of experience, she spearheads initiatives to promote sustainability and reduce carbon footprint in India. Ghai is renowned for her innovative approach and commitment to environmental stewardship.
The current edition also features Divya Ppriya Suresh Babu, Director of Global Delivery Center – HR Operations at Vestas, has a distinguished career in HR and technology. After earning a degree in Information Technology in India, she pursued a Master’s in Management Information Systems in the USA. Starting her career as an HRIT programmer, she quickly transitioned to HR positions. Divya excels in implementing HRIS systems from scratch for Large Scale Global Organizations, optimizing HR processes, and managing global HR shared services.
