Introduce us to Prisha Publications. What was the underlying idea behind the venture and how has it grown since inception?

I created Prisha Publications, a platform for writers & authors with the motto, 'You create, we design, print & publish on an international vista for you'.

Prisha Publications was established back in 2018 when I published two of my own books on Ikebana (Japanese flower art). Initially, the venture was started without any further plan and financial strategies. But with time we have grown from strength to strength.

Based in Hyderabad, Prisha Publications has published over 50 books so far. We promote literature, art and culture through our books. So far, we have published various kinds of books such as books about painting, ikebana, poetry, story, colouring books for different ages and anthologies on multi subjects.

Prisha Publications has a translation division that translates literary work into Hindi, English and Telugu. We have embraced the digital age by publishing most of our books on Kindle. We also offer professional guidance and conduct workshops for the upcoming writers to enhance their skills in editing, creative writing and story writing.

Take us through your entrepreneurial journey of setting up Prisha Publications? Also tell us about the challenges you encountered on the way and how did you overcome them?

The journey towards establishing Prisha Publications as a successful venture has been a uphill battle. After publishing my first two books on Ikebana I was engrossed in promoting them and reaching as many people as possible. I visited most of the book shops of that time in Hyderabad to get a place for my books and used to leave them there with a simple wish to get recognized; believing in that what you give, comes back to you.

The challenging part arrived after my first two books were published. My choices were either to shut the publication house with just two books or take it forward. Having no concrete plan in mind to take Prisha Publications forward, I was in a pickle.

But my love and respect for books did not allow me to give up. I was aware that since we were new in the market, it would be tough to get clients. I used to sit in my study for hours looking online or searching publishers for what type of books they are making. I would also talk to my writer friends enquiring if they would like to publish their works with me. It was then that my dear friend Dr Saumya, who is a poet herself, gave us our first work, a poetry book. Titled Verses and Strokes, the book was written and illustrated by her children Prisha Gupta & Shaurya Gupta. She also helped us bag another book, Swirls and Words, a poetry book written by one of her friends, Beenu Mehta.

These small steps encouraged me and I became hopeful. I realized that depending on clients is not a way to establish my dream project, I also need to look and search for new paths. I collected my poems from my diary, loose pages, notebooks, art papers (I write while I paint) and typed them to start my first poetry book, Chand Lamhe. I started colouring books with my own art works with the help of my nephew Rishabh Jindal, a medical student. To reach more people I started working on anthologies.

Slowly family and friends started noticing that Prisha Publications is taking its roots. My husband Sanjay supported me immensely at the time. I planned and published an international anthology, Ikebanists Around the World with 98 participants from 17 countries and 7 schools. It turned out to be a huge success and received praise from many corners of the world. Clients started coming with their coffee table books and ideas. We have not looked back since.

You are one of the few Ikebana experts in India. Throw some light on your expertise when it comes to Ikebana and your endeavours to popularize the art form in India and internationally.

I have been practicing Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, for the past twenty-two years. I have studied this delicate art from Ohara School of Ikebana, Japan.

Over the years I have presented Ikebana demonstrations and workshops in many countries besides back home in India. During the time of Covid I started giving ikebana lessons and demonstrations online which received good response and continues even today. I am also the author of three books on the techniques of Ikebana teaching in assorted styles.

My first Ikebana book in Hindi, Ikebana- Japani Pushpkala and another in Telugu, Ikebana Sulabham are the only books on the world map written by any writer on Ikebana in Hindi and Telugu. Ikebana: Japani Pushpkala has achieved its place in India Book of World Records. Additionally, I have written an Ikebana book in English for new learners, Ikebana for beginners- fun with flowers. I have also created ten unique colouring books with original Ikebana works’ drawings, work’s coloured picture, and material names. These books are the only books of this type created in the world so far. Ikebanists Around the World has gained international fame for its beautiful design and distinctive theme.

You are also an accomplished artist specializing in various forms of art. Tell us about your work and journey as an artist.

Over the years I have been an artist and painter. My paintings have been displayed in few solo and several group shows in Hyderabad. I am also an established contemporary miniature painting artist. These creations are widely appreciated and recognized for their positive approach to the subject.

I have recently written a book called Inner Reflections, which is a catalogue of tone and texture and includes some of my paintings followed by verses.

Working on paper has a pleasure of its own. I started composing contemporary miniatures, out of my love for traditional Indian Miniature Paintings. I breathe through them and narrate a story creating an atmosphere within the limited space of paper to show the unlimited grace of this prodigious art.

Through my painting I aim to capture a moment and allow the viewer to imagine before and after the story. The simplicity of miniature tradition astonishes me with its wide scope that absorbs lengthy detailed work in its stride beautifully without taxing the viewer of its long and elaborate process.

I am currently working on upcoming painting exhibition called 3D love. The exhibition will be displaying my sculptural art and painting works which were created by using left over objects from factory waste.

You are a creative genius with mastery in various artforms. Tell us about your thoughts on creativity?

I believe that creativity is a gift! It is a blessing and superior power which connects you to the planet. As they say world is temporary and nothing is permanent here, things keep on moving appearing & disappearing. ‘Life’ has its own circle but creativity has its permanent presence & receives new honors at every transmission.

Looking back, how would you summarise your professional journey? Tell us about the role played by your family in helping you achieve success on the professional front.

It has been a beautiful learning journey for me so far. It began with an unknown path towards well written destined achievements. Today I feel proud of my perseverance when awards come as rewards, recognition comes as praises, kind words come as respect.

My husband Sanjay has been a big pillar of support behind my endeavours.
