10. D. Suman Kittur
The path that D. Suman Kittur chose for herself in Kannada lyricism is closely intertwined with her transformation from journalist to director. From 2007 onwards, starting with Aa Dinagalu, she displayed the power of writing emotionally impactful and raw-realistic songs.
As one of the very few females writing lyrics in the still male-dominated industry, she has brought her authenticity from her experiences of rural life and from life itself. She recounts boldly through her lyrics in films like Slum Bala and Edegarike, thus standing apart among Kannada lyricists.
In celebrating these Indian female lyricists, we acknowledge not just their artistry but their courage to carve space in an industry that has long sidelined female voices in songwriting. Their lyrics transcend language and region, resonating with universal human emotions while preserving cultural richness. Each one has redefined the possibilities for women in music, proving that words can be both powerful and enduring. Their legacy will continue to inspire generations of lyricists yet to come, ensuring that Indian female lyricists’ contribution to cinema and music is never forgotten
