Revathi Kamath - Kamath Design Studio
Pioneering Indian architect, Revathi Kamath is known for being a proponent of sustainable and eco-friendly architecture. Born in 1955, she is also known as the ‘Mother of Mud Architecture’ in India. In 1981, Revathi co-founded Kamath Design Studio in New Delhi, along with her husband, Vikas Kamath.
Revathi was environmentally conscious and advocated the use of local natural materials (mud, stone, bamboo and re-useable materials) and passive cooling strategies (design of building to cool naturally) for architecture that was ecologically, culturally, and contextually responsible.
Impactful Designs
Her most recognized projects include the Museum for Tribal Heritage in Bhopal, where the architecture has a seamless continuity with the landscape that is created through earth construction using the actual earth and tribal art practices in the building fabric.
Another remarkable work by her is the Akshay Pratishthan School in New Delhi, which was designed for inclusivity and accessibility as a reformed and sustainable space to learn in, but also pay attention to the needs of differently-abled learners.
Revathi Kamath's work not only redefined sustainable architecture in India, but established a system of socially-inclusive and environmentally responsible design, and she carried that legacy and prestige until her recent death
