Founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411, Ahmedabad, also known as Amdavad is India's first World Heritage City located on the banks of the River Sabarmati in the state of Gujarat. The city having served as the capital of Gujarat from 1960 to 1970, also has a strong association with India's struggle for independence signifying Mahatma Gandhi's stay here for several years and Dandi March initiation from the city against British rule in India. It has many historical attractions.

On the brighter side, being the second-largest producer of cotton in India, Ahmedabad is famous for its textile industry, and also known as the textile hub of India it is named the 'Manchester of India' along with Kanpur. Over the years, now the city has also emerged as an important economic and industrial hub in India, is moving dynamically towards commerce, communication and construction scetor. In the past years, Ahmedabad has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under the Government of India's flagship Smart Cities Mission. Well, given the liberalisation in Indian economy, a large number of industries related to textiles, chemicals, machinery, metal products, beauty & care, pharmaceutical, engineering, plastics, electrical appliances, and others are thriving in the region.
