On September 13, 2023, President Droupadi Murmu opened the three-day digital session of the Gujarat Assembly, emphasising the need for increased participation of women in politics without overtly raising reservations in assemblies or Parliament.
President Murmu praised Gujarat's efforts for the welfare of both humans and animals during her presentation on the opening day of the Monsoon session, expressing her joy in observing the state's success. She then addressed the subject of women's parliamentary participation, adding, "Today, women excel in various fields such as science and technology, defence, and sports." They should also have strong political representation."
"When I meet school children across the country, I see hope and a desire to contribute to the nation," President Murmu said. They can play an important part in nation-building if given the correct opportunity." Her remarks coincided with anticipation that a women's reservation measure would be introduced during the forthcoming extraordinary session of Parliament, which begins on September 18.
President Murmu complimented Gujarat for producing famous leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, as well as for being in the forefront of advancement among Indian states, in her remarks.
Several members of the Brahmakumari sect were visible in the gallery during her lecture. President Murmu is a member of this spiritual community. Several measures will be introduced during the Monsoon session of the Gujarat Assembly, and all legislative procedures will be done digitally. Speaker Shankar Chaudhary emphasised that this is the first legislature in the country to go totally paperless, including during question-and-answer sessions.
Meanwhile, Governor Acharya Devvrat was missing from the session owing to the death of a family member in his birthplace of Kurukshetra.
The desire for expanded female political representation comes at a time when gender parity in Indian legislatures has been the topic of much debate and discussion. President Murmu's remarks are intended to energise the current debate on this vital topic.
