5 Women-led Tech Startups to Watch For

The startup ecosystem of India is getting stronger and stronger with the addition of new startups every year. Recently, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, India’s Ambassador to the United States pointed out that the entrepreneurial activity has picked up in India. The country is now home to 21 unicorns, and startups with over $1 billion in valuation each, and 40 more of such companies have been founded overseas by people of Indian origin. The country is currently the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world. The fact is - India is now witnessing growth in each and every sector and the main reason behind it is not just the introduction of technology, establishment of new organizations and enterprises, or implementing industry 4.0, but it is the participation of more women leaders.

The women community of India is now contributing in every space, competing and even doing better compared to their male counterparts, and accept it or not this is making a huge difference in the growth of the country. More often than not, the buzzing startup culture has been praised for its progressive mentality across the board. Key aspects like funds, safety, comfortable work environment, business opportunities and many more, have been improved from a female standpoint, either by the use of cutting edge technology or a holistic system to create a niche space for women. Though there are many spaces in which women leaders have already waved the flag of victory. However, in this article, we will concentrate on one of the most usual yet prominent segments – the tech startup realm. Here’s a list of 5 tech startups with women entrepreneurs behind them.

DocEngage

DocEngage is led by Asha Satapathy (Co-Founder) and it is a med-tech platform that is designed to standardize healthcare procedures for clinics and medical centres and grants users access to inventories across the country. It allows medical professions to effectively manage resources. The company utilizes a comprehensive healthcare software suite to improve patient experience. The company mainly serves the Indian people and its headquarters are based in Bangalore, India. Asha was a state-level basketball player at school & grown-up as Sr. Technical Architect at Sun, moved to CGI, before founding DocEngage. Today, Asha is excelling at her work through her venture DocEngage that is acting as a one-stop solution for single or multi-speciality hospitals, clinics & startups; HIPAA, 100+ Integrations, advanced tech, API & Interoperability, standards & compliances.

Embibe

Blossoming in the EdTech space, Embibe is an AI-backed online learning platform which was founded by Aditi Avasthi. This platform was developed with Aditi’s passion for encouraging education in India with the help of AI.  Aditi is one of the very few women who has begun an AI startup that makes optimal use of the technology to provide users with personalized recommendations to better their attempts. Her platform also makes use of data analytics to create customized learning modules for students. At the Economic Times Prime Women Leadership Awards 2019, Aditi was awarded the ‘Accenture Vaahini Innovator of The Year’. Since its inception, Embibe has been working on disrupting the education space that has long remained stagnant. The platform brings the power of information to help students prepare better for life-changing exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, CETs, Banking and more.

Leap

Founded by Ragini Das, Leap answers some of the fundamental questions in terms of Indian women in leadership positions. While it is obvious that the road to the top is often marred by roadblocks and different challenges for women and also that they end up facing unconscious biases and take on more family responsibilities, Leap plans to forge a powerful private network of rising women leaders beginning from the  Delhi-NCR region, with eventual plans to expand across the nation. Ragini was an ex-Zomato executive. Through intensive research, she with her partner Anand Sinha (Co-Founder) found out that women’s careers are often distracted due to four major factors: network, support, learning, and wellness. The immediate need for a proper professional network that fostered solid offline professional relationships and went beyond the usual online connections are what Leap looks to fulfil.

LevelApp

The organization is a Hyderabad-based startup that provides an online peer learning platform for K-12, bachelors, and PhD levels, along with skill-based learning for languages and technology. Founded by Suchitra Reddy and Ashwitha Reddy Chinnamail, LevelApp is primarily aimed at helping students find the best tutors from among their own peers or seniors. The platform was established as a result of the lack of instant peer learning platforms in India. This app allows students to clear their doubts through online and in-person learning. LevelApp’s e-learning platform has carved a niche for itself, just like other Ed-Tech firms including Testbook, Byjus, Vedantu and more. Suchitra and Ashwitha are both alumni of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and have completed their bachelor’s course in computer science and information technology. Even with no managerial background in their resumes, they have been able to enroll more than 7,000 students from across 19 countries, with courses for K-12, bachelors, and PhD levels, as well as skill-based learning.

Mera Medicare

Madhu Khandelwal Gupta is the Founder of Mera Medicare. It is a digital portal that sensitizes people to purchase generic medications as a conventional treatment method. The company relies on online technology to educate people on the need to conduct primary research before being admitted to any hospital. Madhu is a geek with a tremendous interest in high-tech and internet industry. Apart from being the Founder and CTO of Mera Medicare, Madhu founded a series of other Start-ups. At present, Mera Medicare has close to 5000 registered patients and more than 250 pharmacies in its network. After deliberating and researching various aspects of running an e-Commerce business in the pharmaceutical industry, Madhu started up in July 2014. For every medicine, customers can buy either branded or generic versions. While branded medicines cost more, generic medicines are cheap in comparison with the same benefits. The company has its presence in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Bangalore.
