Anjali Banga
CHRO, Wonder Cement
CHROs serve as catalysts for organizational success and positive transformation, not only by enhancing company performance but also by influencing the broader conversation on HR practices and leadership with Corporate Social Responsibility. Their strategic initiatives shape progressive workplace cultures, foster talent growth, and exemplify ethical leadership. By giving precedence to initiatives that go beyond immediate organizational requirements, CHROs actively contribute to advancements across the industry, establishing benchmarks for proficient HR practices and leadership within organizations and enhancing Corporate Social Responsibilities and governance. This pivotal role they play significantly influences the trajectory of human resources and organizational dynamics. An exemplary illustration of such a CHRO is Anjali Banga, an institution itself.
Anjali Banga stands as a seasoned and accomplished Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) at Wonder Cement, bringing over 26 years of strategic human resources expertise to the table. Her illustrious career spans various industries, showcasing her versatility and proficiency in navigating the intricacies of Information Technology, Telecommunications, Oil & Gas, Textile, Power, Pipes & Plates, and Cement & Construction Industries. Below is an excerpt of Anjali Banga’s exclusive interaction with Women Entrepreneur magazine.
What insights can you share about your educational journey that paved the way for your Human Resources career?
My educational journey, marked by relocations and diverse academic pursuits, began in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Indore, Delhi, Pune and meandered at major cities. Despite initial aspirations for a medical career, fate steered me towards Economics Honours at Delhi University, Delhi. Navigating unfamiliar subjects with resilience, I embraced the semester system and conquered challenges. Post-Graduation saw an impromptu leap into an MBA at Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, specializing in International Marketing, and a Master’s Degree in Business Management from the London School of Economics, London (United Kingdom).
This decision, unconventional but pivotal, paved the way for a successful nine-year tenure in marketing. From representing prominent companies in direct / channel sales to navigating tender processes, each phase contributed to a resilient, diverse, and ethical professional trajectory in the field of HR, building a people-centric culture and valuing human assets.
Introduce us to Wonder Cement. Tell us about the responsibilities you shoulder as the firm’s CHRO.
Wonder Cement, a dynamic and promoter-driven company, evolved from a marble hub to a prominent player in the cement industry. As the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), my role extends beyond traditional HR functions; it is about being a strategic business partner.
The company's journey, rooted in granite and marble, led to the development of a thriving township. Wonder Cement, with its world-class technology and stateof- the-art automated plant at Nimbahera (Rajasthan), boasts four lines producing 18 metric tons annually.
As an hr leader, I champion inclusivity, ensuring all voices are heard in decision-making processes
Expanding strategically, we entered North and West India, with integrated units in Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and now in Gujarat With a commitment to employee welfare and innovative products like Wonder Wallcare Putty, Ninety Degree Stone, Wonder Home Finance and the Body Shop. We continue our remarkable ascent, earning accolades in the Guinness Book of Awards within just 12 years.
In your opinion what are the key challenges you encounter as an HR leader in today’s business climate? What steps do you take to overcome these roadblocks?
Navigating the intricacies of today's business climate as an HR leader brings unique challenges, especially being a woman. Rather than succumb to business challenges, I approach them as opportunities for transformation. When introducing comprehensive HR automation at Wonder Cement, resistance and skepticism surfaced.
However, I persevered, collaborating with business partners and addressing semantic barriers, breaking down the resistance. Similarly, implementing a uniform policy faced pushback, yet a strategic study unveiled practical challenges. By fostering open communication and aligning with the organizational vision, I've overcome hurdles, earning trust and contributing to a cohesive, progressive work environment at Wonder Cement.
Is achieving balance particularly challenging for women, given societal expectations?
Balancing work and life is immensely challenging for women, given the societal expectations and constant connectivity. Even on weekends or vacations, work demands persist, eroding the concept of true balance. The discourse on empowering women lacks concrete outcomes, primarily serving political gestures. Many women face disparities in benefits and opportunities, be it in politics or corporate sectors. There is a need for a profound shift, addressing emotional aspects and dismantling biases for genuine work-life equilibrium.
What advice would you offer to women aspiring to become entrepreneurs or business leaders?
To aspiring women entrepreneurs or business leaders, my advice is twofold: first, embrace authenticity. Second, avoid leaning too heavily on seeking sympathy or empathy. Instead, assert your equality and capabilities confidently. Refrain from yielding easily; articulate your points logically to garner admiration, recognition, and collaboration from others.
