Industrialization also brought with it the role of women in the workforce too. Women were initially on-boarded as caretakers for employees in factories. As time passed, workplaces evolved and so did the HR function. Gradually human resource departments started to look over non-core business functions including hiring, formulating work policies, work place management etc. but, the HR function still remained administrative in nature for the most part. The trend continued for years and women continued joining the HR function cross all industries and geographies. In 2016 a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) found that 72 percent of HR managers were women. Similarly, Payscale.com concluded that close to 86 percent of HR generalists by 2017 were women. The percentage of women in HR roles was staggering when compared to other business functions. But they continue to be under represented in top decision making roles even in the field of human resource. In a modern workplace the role of People Management has increased in importance. Today, acquiring and managing talented resources is imperative for businesses to succeed. There is the need for proactive, multi-dimensional people management strategies. There has thus been a rise in a new C suite role, the Chief People Officer. A CPO is a new-age position which is geared towards building and maintaining a company culture by overlooking all aspects of HR. Theseindividuals are responsible for hiring new employees, developing training programs, and improving employee retention rates.A CPO focuses on your guiding the employees to understand therequirements of accomplish their jobs and remain committed to your business's mission. They evaluate which HR strategies are most effective and implement them to achieve the desired organizational outcome. The current edition of Women Entrepreneur India magazine shines the spotlight on women Chief People Officer who have a carved a niche for themselves in the HR industry. The stories of these illustrious women leaders is a testament to the rise of women power in the business world.
